What is Mindfulness versus Christian Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is simply being present and focused in the moment. It is a form of meditation or contemplation. Many of these mindfulenss concepts are based on the Mind Body Stress Reduction program, having as its origin in the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. Over thirty six years ago, physicians and clinicians began studying the positive impact of certain meditation practices of patients, as well as helping physicians and healthcare workers become more compassionate and empathetic. Christian Mindfulness believes that these studies support the contention that when we are exposed to more stress, we disconnect with others, our cognitive functions decline, fight-or-flight hormones go up, causing us to become more biased.
What Mindfulness is Not
Some critics have equated mindfulness practices with Bhuddism. However, doing mindfulness makes you no. more Bhuddist than going to a Chinese restaurant. There are many houses of our Lord. Indeed, almost every major religion follows some form of the Golden Rule - do onto others, as you would have them do onto you. With over 30,000 denominations of Christianity in the U.S. alone, with many of those thinking that they are the only ones practicing true faith and going to Heaven, there exists the problem. When we judge and pretend we know God's will, we violate the commandment to love others as ourselves. It does not state our respective church. Jesus reached out to those who were outcasts...without judgment. We must love our neighbors. One step towards that faith is learning to be aware of ourselves and being more present. Not with the words and dictates of organized religion, but as Jesus preached with a loving heart. Sin is the state of separation from God. When we hate and judge others, we have separated ourselves. We need to reconnect. We hope that this will help that journey.
Which Direction Are You Going?
Scientific studies in the U.S. have demonstrated that if we engage in certain mindfulness practices, in combination with thoughtful prayer, we can improve our health, our focus, and our relationships. This is not some euphoric state. Rather, this is us learning to be present and control our mental responses to a world that continually bombards us with external stimuli that distracts us from who we are, who we want to be, and who created us.
Prayer is a Form of Meditation
Prayer is a simple form of meditation and a form of mindfulness. Judeo-Christian history is full of stories of prophets connecting with Spirit in solitude and in contemplative prayer. Have our prayers become rote and merely habitual. Or are our prayers connecting on a special level where we feel energized, inspired, strengthened, and empowered to good? Only you can answer that. The purpose of this site is to help you develop a more meaningful and prayerful practice.
Authenticity of Heart and Mind
The practice of Christian Mindfulness seeks to help us live a life of intention and purpose. Hence, we become present, spiritually. Not just on worship day, but throughout our week. We understand who we are. We are guided by the Divine wisdom of a loving God and become equipped to love one another, as ourselves - as we were commanded. We learn that unless we feel balanced and authentic with our inner being, we struggle in having an authentic relationship with others and, in particular, with the Divine.
A Life with Intention
Living life with intention involves being aware of who and what we are, and how we interact with those around us. If we "express our free will" and ask for Divine guidance, we open ourselves to the manifestations of the Divine Order.
LIving a life of Intention involves a degree of fearlessness. To be authentic with ourselves, to chase your dreams to better the world, to align our purposes with the Divine. This also involves positive visualization. If we visualize love and peace, we may not create world peace, but we can create peace within ourselves and those surrounding us. Thus, in a sense, we do change the world, starting with the world in which we see and experience. This is not easy. It is not an overnight transformation. It is a journey. Part of a journey called Life.
